American truck drivers, think the HOS here in the U.S. is screwed up?
I think “Truckies” from down under would disagree with you.
Truckers in the U.S. drive for 11 hours, then off for ten hours. But, there is no “mandatory” 30 minute break every five hours.

DOT’s Decision to Ban Truckers Texting Premature

January 26, 2010 the DOT and FMCSA agreed to ban Truck and Bus Drivers from sending and receiving text or email messages.
I think this might have been premature.
Insurance.com released a report earlier with a top ten list of the worst drivers.
Guess who didn’t even make the top ten list?

We drivers have seen many changes over the last few years that have adversely affected us and could endanger not only our lives, but also our livelihoods.
The new HOS, now under re-review, took away our flexibility to run our trucks in the safest manner for our own health and safety.
