I wanted to write a little about my own experience&#115&#32&#97bout going the extra mile, or doing little favors &#102&#111&#114 owners and dispatchers.

Just about every company &#73&#32&#101ver worked for, I became friends with the owners o&#114&#32&#116he dispatchers. Some places you work at, this is t&#104&#101&#32only way to get ahead, and to continue to stay out&#32&#105&#110 front.

I would do those little things nobody els&#101&#32&#119ould do, fudge my log book h<s></s>ere, drop a load there&#44&#32&#119hatever it took to get things done. I don’t recommend anyone doi&#110&#103&#32these things.

I normally only worked for small com&#112&#97&#110ies, you get treated as a person and not as a numb&#101&#114&#46 But, there are drawbacks to working for smaller f&#108&#101&#101ts. For instance the last company I worked for, yo&#117&#32&#99ould literally drive as many hours per day as you &#119&#97&#110ted, and haul as many loads as you wanted. There w&#97&#115&#32always “something extra” to do as far as driving and hauling a load somewhere.&#32&#66&#117t if you took an extra load, yo<s></s>u still needed to b&#101&#32&#97ble to get back to do what was, scheduled for you &#116&#104&#101 next day. My regular day consisted of 630 mile ro&#117&#110&#100 trip, 11 hours of driving exactly, if something e&#120&#116&#114a was thrown in, then it made for a long day and n&#105&#103&#104t.

I ran a loose leaf log book so “replacing days” was no problem. I knew it w&#97&#115&#32illegal, and understood the consequences if I were&#32&#99&#97ught. I had two dispatchers, and at any given mome&#110&#116&#32I could be reached and asked to cover an extra loa&#100&#44&#32it happened quite often. A friend of mine that als&#111&#32&#119orked at this company, began doing what I was doin&#103&#44&#32to earn <s></s>a little extra on the paycheck.

We hauled &#98&#117&#108k pneumatic tankers, and hauled lime kiln dust plu&#115&#32&#99oncrete dust. At one particular rock quarry you co&#117&#108&#100 load 24 hours per day, he had loaded a load reall&#121&#32&#101arly one morning to deliver before his early morni&#110&#103&#32appointment for his regular day began. He left the&#32&#112&#108ant, and another truck left at the same time he di&#100&#44&#32but the other truck was losing product. About 10AM&#32&#116&#104at day the dispatcher called him to stop whatever &#104&#101&#32was doing, and to come to the terminal. They expla&#105&#110&#101d to him what he was accused of doing, and told hi&#109&#32&#116hat he was under investigation and that they would&#32&#109&#97ke their decision the next day, and sent him back &#116&#111&#32what he was doing before.

He told me about this, a&#110&#100&#32he added in that he was friends with all these peo&#112&#108&#101 and that he had nothing to worry about. He was fi&#114&#101&#100 the next day, and he wasn’t even the one that was losing produc&#116&#32&#116o begin with. I guess the moral of this story is: &#78&#111&#32matter if the dispatcher or owner seems like they &#97&#114&#101 your best friend, they’re not. Don’t expect them to back you up, even if you &#97&#114&#101 doing them a “favor” and getting them out of a mess if something happens to y&#111&#117&#46

A driver has t<s></s>o look out for number one at all ti&#109&#101&#115. I love the fact that drivers have the technology&#32&#116&#111 catch sneaky dispatchers up in all sorts of lies.&#32&#87&#104en companies first started using Qualcomms to disp&#97&#116&#99h by, we drivers thought the days of running extra&#32&#108&#111ads were gone. Just a few clicks on the computer c&#97&#110&#32fix that. Diesel <s></s>Lady on twitter gave me a great i&#100&#101&#97 earlier, she told me she takes pictures of her Qu&#97&#108&#99omm messages, I had never heard or thought of that&#32&#111&#110e. In case the message mysteriously disappeared, s&#104&#101&#32still had a copy of it.

When we used to be dispatc&#104&#101&#100 by phone, we used pocket recorders to tape record&#32&#99&#111nversations with dispatch, just to make sure he or&#32&#115&#104e lived up to their end of the bargain. There is n&#111&#116&#104ing more funnier than when a dispatcher or owner t&#114&#105&#101s to back out, when they are on tape and confronte&#100&#32&#119ith it, they will do some squirming. Just remember&#44&#32&#110o matter how much they seem like they are your fri&#101&#110&#100, don’t trust them. They are only going to look after themselves&#44&#32&#116hey will not take up for you.

Yes, the time for resetting &#111&#117&#114 clocks. On, or just befor<s></s>e, 2:00 AM – Sunday, March 14 gets her&#101&#44&#32set your watches and clocks ahead one hour. The ca&#116&#99&#104<s></s>y little phrase “Spring ahead, Fall back” may &#104&#101&#108p with this concept. I don’t know about you but the last thing m&#121&#32&#99ircadian rhythm needs is this biannual cheap shot.&#32&#66&#121 the way, have you ever thought how ludicrous the &#116&#101&#114m ” Time Change” is? I mean there are still 24 hours in a day,&#32&#114&#105ght? It’s not as if we are changing the rotational speed of the &#101&#97&#114th on it’s axis or anything.

Due to the passage of the Energy Po&#108&#105&#99y Act of 2005, Daylight Saving Time has been four &#119&#101&#101ks longer since 2007. The Act extended Daylight Sa&#118&#105&#110g Time by four weeks from the second Sunday of Mar&#99&#104&#32to the first Sunday of November, with the hope tha&#116&#32&#105t would save 10,000 barrels of oil each day throug&#104&#32&#114educed use of power by businesses during daylight &#104&#111&#117rs. Realistically, it is difficult, if not impossi&#98&#108&#101, to determine so called “energy” savings from&#32&#68&#97ylight Saving Time. Based on a variety of factors,&#32&#105&#116 is quite possible and the opini<s></s>on of this writer,&#32&#116&#104at little or no power, or fuel is saved by Dayligh&#116&#32&#83aving Time.

It seems that Arizona (except some Ind&#105&#97&#110 Reservations), Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin&#32&#73&#115lands and American Samoa have chosen not to observ&#101&#32&#68aylight Saving Time. I am a huge champion of state’s rights but &#116&#104&#105s just breeds confusion. Come on Arizona, you need&#32&#116&#111 give this one up. I mean the nation of Kyrgyzstan&#32&#105&#115 the only country that observes year-round Dayligh&#116&#32&#83aving Time! Difference is, I don’t care about them because I don’t drive there&#46
&#10
&#73f you are a professional driver, here is the part &#73&#32&#119ant to st<s></s>ress. When clocks are set forward an hour&#32&#105&#110 the spring, accidents go up according to a 1998 s&#116&#117&#100y of the effect of daylight savings time. Sleep de&#112&#114&#105vation is considered the most likely cause of a 17&#32&#112&#101rcent increase in accidents on the Monday followin&#103&#32&#116he time change. The study also found no significan&#116&#32&#114eduction in accidents in the fall when clocks are &#115&#101&#116 back an hour.

So by all means make sure, that you&#32&#116&#97ke steps to get a normal, restful amount of sleep &#116&#104&#105s weekend. I<s></s> don’t want anyone, especially a truck driver to be &#105&#110&#118olved in an accident on the Sunday or Monday that &#102&#111&#108low this change. If you take only one thing away a&#102&#116&#101r reading this, let it be, plan ahead and exerci&#115&#101&#32caution.

You may be thinking that I believe Daylig&#104&#116&#32Savings Time is foolish hoax. If so, you are corre&#99&#116&#46 But as my friend Jason here said to me today, “&#89&#101&#97h I know, but what can you do?”.

Can a company fire an employee for refusing to hau&#108&#32&#97n overweight load?

Can the company make me haul a &#108&#111&#97d that is overweight?

Can the dispatcher make me d&#114&#105&#118e in bad weather?

Can the company make me pull an &#117&#110&#115afe trailer or drive a truck that is not safe?

Th&#101&#32&#100river has the last say in what he or she “has” to do. If the company “dispatcher” tells you that you MUST &#112&#117&#108l that trailer that is unsafe, DON’T DO IT. The driver is respon&#115&#105&#98le, you will take the fall, not the dispatcher or &#116&#104&#101 company. Same thing goes for weather, exhaustion &#97&#110&#100 f<s></s>atigue, etc. it is you the driver that makes tha&#116&#32&#100ecision. Not the dispatcher, owner or anybody else&#46
&#10
&#73f I worked for a company and the dispatcher told m&#101&#32&#116o haul a load that was overweight, and there was n&#111&#32&#119ay to get it legal, I would laugh in his/her face &#97&#110&#100 tell them HELL NO! If a company is too stupid to &#102&#105&#103ure out how much weight they can haul…and bids on a contract for&#32&#116&#111o much weight for each load…they should not be bidding on contra&#99&#116&#115.

A friend of mine today posted a picture of a wei&#103&#104&#116 tick<s></s>et from a CAT scale, it showed the load over &#56&#48&#44760 pounds.

If there was no way to slide <s></s>the tandems to get&#32&#105&#116 legal, and the shipper would not unload it and re&#108&#111&#97d it, then somebody else would be pulling that loa&#100&#46&#32Pulling an overloaded trailer is not only dangerou&#115&#44&#32but it is illegal. Plus there is so much risk invo&#108&#118&#101d in doing it. What would have happened if a car w&#111&#117&#108d have made a mistake and hit the truck overloaded&#63
&#10
&#73t would be the driver of the tractor trailers faul&#116&#32&#97utomatically because of the overweight load. What &#119&#111&#117ld have happened if the truck was pulled over rout&#105&#110&#101ly? The driver would probably receive whatever tic&#107&#101&#116 for the <s></s>reason they were pulled over for plus an &#111&#118&#101rweight ticket. What would have happened if someth&#105&#110&#103 had broken on the trailer, or the truck? The comp&#97&#110&#121 could use it to fire you, or make you pay for the&#32&#98&#114oken part. There is too much risk involved with ha&#117&#108&#105ng an overweight load, when you are NOT PERMITTED &#116&#111&#32do so. Even if a dispatcher were too “suggest” to the driver to go a different&#32&#114&#111ute to avoid the scales DON’T DO IT.

A truck driver cannot legal&#108&#121&#32be fired for refusing to haul a non-permitted over&#119&#101&#105ght load, or to drive an unsafe truck or trailer. &#73&#102&#32there truly is nothing you can do to either fix th&#101&#32&#111verweight or make the equipment safe. Even if the &#99&#111&#109pany says you MUST DO IT! If the driver does do it&#44&#32&#116he driver is held responsible for anything that ha&#112&#112&#101ns. If a driver is fired and has the proof to show&#32&#116&#104at the load was overweight and or the equipment wa&#115&#32&#117nsafe to drive or pull. Then, the first phone call&#32&#73&#32would make, would be to a lawyer for a wrongful te&#114&#109&#105nation suit.

Today the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminis&#116&#114&#97tion (NHTSA) released their report on traffic fata&#108&#105&#116ies for 2009.

The report indicates that fatalitie&#115&#32&#97re still on a downward trend.

This is good news o&#98&#118&#105ously, but still it is too <s></s>many according to U.S. &#84&#114&#97nsportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

The statement La&#72&#111&#111d put on his blog this morning says: “But, I am also disturbed t&#104&#97&#116 we are still talking about nearly 34,000 preventa&#98&#108&#101 deaths a year.” Preventable being the keyword here. According t&#111&#32&#116he NHTSA report there were 33,963 deaths on the hi&#103&#104&#119ays in 2009. How can they all be preventable?

An a&#99&#99&#105dent is just that; an accident. They had accidents back when&#32&#104&#111rse and buggy was all that was used for transporta&#116&#105&#111n. Hell, even people walking fall so to say the ac&#99&#105&#100ents were preventable is ludicrous to say the leas&#116&#46&#32I’m not sure what LaHood thinks is preventable, but it must be a&#110&#121&#116hing that happens that causes an accident.

Definit&#105&#111&#110 of an accident: an unforeseen and unplanned event&#32&#111&#114 circumstance. Don’t get me wrong any accident is bad, and even &#111&#110&#101 death is one too many. But we are going to have a&#99&#99&#105dents happen no matter what the DOT does. The only&#32&#119&#97y to prevent any accident from happening is to tak&#101&#32&#97way the transportation. But like <s></s>I said even peopl&#101&#32&#102all down while walking.

Anyway here are the number&#115&#32&#102or 2009

A decline in highway deaths of 8.9% from 2008 to&#32&#50&#4809

The lowest fatality rate–1.16 deaths for every 100 million vehicle mile&#115&#32&#32traveled–on record

The lowest overall number of deaths–33,963–since 1954

15 straight quarters of decline in the &#110&#117&#109ber of overall roadway deaths

Today a tanker truck had just left the loading sit&#101&#32&#97t Neal, WV.

It was loaded<s></s> with Maleic Anhydryde a&#32&#99&#104emical that is used to make resins, fiberglass, au&#116&#111&#45body filler, etc.

It is used in some candies, and &#105&#115&#32a filler for dynamite.

The<s></s> news sites that report&#101&#100&#32this accident “God Bless them” tried to explain the situation, but failed mise&#114&#97&#98ly in my opinion.

They were reporting that a tanke&#114&#32&#104ad overturned and was hauling Maleic Acid.

Techni&#99&#97&#108ly this is not true, as the only product that the &#99&#111&#109pany that had the accident hauls out of that plant&#32&#105&#115 Maleic Anhydryde. How do I know? Well, I used to &#119&#111&#114k for this company and have hauled literally thous&#97&#110&#100s o<s></s>f those loads from that same plant.

Maleic Anhy&#100&#114&#121de is a chemical that is loaded into tankers of co&#117&#114&#115e as a liquid. It is loaded at a temperature of at&#32&#108&#101ast one-hundred and fifty degrees and must be main&#116&#97&#105ned at that temperature or close to it, while in t&#114&#97&#110sit. Anything less than one-hundred and fifty degr&#101&#101&#115 must be heated up with steam at a nearby tank-was&#104&#32&#111r the use of the in-transit heat system on the tra&#105&#108&#101r. Maleic Anhydryde will turn to pure acid if a te&#109&#112&#101rature of two-hundred degrees is reached. Maleic A&#110&#104&#121dryde is a corrosive chemical which will irritate &#116&#104&#101 eyes, nose, mouth, lungs, and can be absorbed thr&#111&#117&#103h the skin in liquid form it can also cause severe&#32&#98&#117rns from the product temperature.

<s></s>When it is in th&#101&#32&#100ry form, the crystals it forms can be irritant as &#119&#101&#108l. But when it is in a solid form and cold a perso&#110&#32&#99an reach down and pick it up without harming onese&#108&#102&#46 Water will turn it from a solid to a liquid and i&#116&#32&#119ill cause<s></s> irritation again. While loading and unlo&#97&#100&#105ng this chemical a person needs to wear a respirat&#111&#114&#44 chemical/heat resistant rubber gloves, full face &#115&#104&#105eld and a chemical resistant rain suite. Most plac&#101&#115&#32don’t require all this, but it is good practice.

It is a colorle&#115&#115&#32liquid that is very heavy and has a very slow reac&#116&#105&#111n time for <s></s>movement or “slosh in the tank”. It will jump you into an intersect&#105&#111&#110 if you must stop quick. The force is incredible a&#115&#32&#116he slosh moves through the tank. It is hauled in a&#32&#115&#116ainless steel smooth bore tank that does not have &#98&#97&#102fles in it. The product will “freeze” up anything that is not in the liquid it&#115&#101&#108f. Dome lids, clean out caps, “christmas trees” and the internal valve inside &#116&#104&#101 tank are the main freezing points in the tank. A “christmas tre&#101” is what is &#117&#115&#101d to hook up a nitrogen line or airline used to un&#108&#111&#97d some products. It usually fits in the dome area &#97&#110&#100 is attached with a “chicago fitting”.

Chemical tankers have to valves one is &#105&#110&#116ernal, and one is external to reduce the chances o&#102&#32&#115pills. The internal is opened by a small hand pump&#32&#108&#111cated at the rear of the tank hydraulic fluid forc&#101&#100&#32through a line opens the internal valve. O<s></s>n the in&#115&#105&#100e of a tank it resembles a drain stop in a bathroo&#109&#32&#115ink. It pops up to be open and is sucked back-down&#32&#116&#111 be closed, and has a rubber seal around it. The e&#120&#116&#101rnal valve is left open while the loading process &#103&#111&#101s on, in order to see if the internal valve is lea&#107&#105&#110g. Depending on how much leakage occurs determines&#32&#119&#104ether or not the loader operator will continue to &#108&#111&#97d the tank.

While looking at the video and picture&#115&#32&#97nd knowing the area and having experience pulling &#116&#104&#101 same product for the same company. In my opinion,&#32&#116&#104e corner was taken to fast causing the tanker to o&#118&#101&#114turn. Like I wrote before, the product is very hea&#118&#121&#32and has a slow slosh reaction. The reason I think &#116&#104&#101 corner was taken to fast is, when you make the co&#114&#110&#101r it is the start of a very steep grade (Hill) and&#32&#97&#32driver needs to have some speed built up in order &#116&#111&#32pull this hill. I will say I am in no way an exper&#116&#32&#97ccident re-creator, but I do have a lot of exper<s></s>ie&#110&#99&#101 with that corner and that product.

It was good to&#32&#104&#101ar there were no injuries, and that the tanker was&#32&#116&#104e only vehicle involved.

Several people in Washington seem to t&#104&#105&#110k so. Do you want Mexican trucks to take your Amer&#105&#99&#97n freight?

That will be the case, when the Obama a&#100&#109&#105nistration allows the Mexican trucks back into the&#32&#85&#46S. on Mexico’s terms.

Mexico has not only indicated they will co&#110&#116&#105nue with the tariff’s, but will make them higher, if the new cro&#115&#115&#45border plan is not to their liking. We not only ar&#101&#32&#100ealing with Mexico’s illegal strong-arm tactics, but plus we are&#32&#103&#111ing to allow them to raise the bar more?

Mexico st&#105&#108&#108 has not shown proof of fixing their enormous list&#32&#111&#102 sa<s></s>fety and security issues. It’s hard to show proof when you do&#110’t have it. A&#110&#100&#32U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk wants to just g&#105&#118&#101 in to Mexico’s strong-arm tactics. Kirk has also publicly state&#100&#32&#116hat the easiest way to put an end to the tariff’s is to start ye&#116&#32&#97nother cross-border trucking program.

The easiest &#119&#97&#121 to end this ridiculous argument, is to BUY AMERIC&#65&#78&#46 Cut Mexico off where it counts. If Americans woul&#100&#32&#115top buying anything that came from Mexico, there w&#111&#117&#108d be no reason to have this issue. If Mexico still&#32&#119&#97nted to import items from the U.S., then they can &#99&#111&#109e to the border and pick it up. I’m not sure of the percentage o&#102&#32&#65merican drivers who would haul into Mexico, but I’m sure it is a&#32&#115&#108im number.

I listened to KTRH news radio and they &#115&#97&#105d that they have been told that Me<s></s>xican Trucks wer&#101&#32&#105n better shape safety-wise than American trucks. O&#79&#73&#68A Executive Vice-President Todd Spencer, set them &#115&#116&#114aight on that issue. It is ludicrous to even think&#32&#116&#104at Mexican Trucks are Safer than American Trucks. &#84&#104&#101re is no comparison to how Mexico inspects trucks &#97&#110&#100 drivers compared to how America inspects trucks a&#110&#100&#32drivers.

There is not hardly a week that goes by t&#104&#97&#116 a tractor trailer gets pulled over at the border &#111&#114&#32on the highway where illegal drugs are found and t&#104&#101&#32load originated from Mexico. Its ironic, that the &#98&#111&#114ders are supposed to be closed to Mexican trucks b&#117&#116&#32many still operate here in the U.S. today.

It’s past the time fo&#114&#32&#65merica to start looking out for Americans. The Ame&#114&#105&#99an citizen could easily control this decision by s&#105&#109&#112ly not buying anything from Mexico. What comes out&#32&#111&#102 Mexico that we MUST have? I’m sure we can produce it here if it&#32&#119&#101re needed. Like I previously have written if Mexic&#111&#32&#115till wants to import from the U.S. then allow U.S.&#32&#116&#114ucks to haul it to the borders and let Mexico come&#32&#97&#110d pick it up.

When did it become the policy of the&#32&#85&#110ited States to just give in to the demands made wh&#101&#110&#32they are illegal or not? We as U.S. citizens have &#116&#104&#101 right and need to voice our concerns about these &#114&#101&#97l issues to our Senators and Representatives who W&#79&#82&#75 for us. Contact your Senator and Representative t&#111&#100&#97y and let your voice be heard.

&#78&#111&#119 after several months have gone by, you think I ha&#118&#101&#32changed my mind?

See one good thing about owning t&#104&#105&#115 site is, I can write you a letter and post it, bu&#116&#32&#73 don’t have to see your reply. Unless of course I go into the sp&#97&#109&#32comment section to nose around a bit because that &#105&#115&#32where your comments will always go. I tried to ban&#32&#121&#111u, but as a typical spammer that you are, you use &#97&#32&#109asked IP so typical means of banning the IP cannot&#32&#98&#101 used. So I just set all your comments to go direc&#116&#108&#121 to spam.

It doesn’t matter how hard you try, you will never get&#32&#97&#32comment to show up on this blog. There is nothing &#121&#111&#117 have to say worth reading anyway. Also, you think&#32&#116&#104is gives me more work to do having to go in and de&#108&#101&#116e your comments? Well, you are sadly mistaken as l&#105&#107&#101 I said before all your comments go to spam, and a&#102&#116&#101r a certain amount of spam comments or a certain n&#117&#109&#98er of days they are automatically deleted.

So, qui&#116&#32&#119asting your time by trying to post a comment here,&#32&#97&#115 it will NEVER happen.
